Pattern Description:

This pattern will produce 2 quilts for you – a positive version and a negative version. The positive version shows the dark trees against a lighter background. The negative version shows brightly colored trees shrouded in darkness.

For the positive quilt I chose fabric with more autumnal tones then used buttons as leaves scattered on the ground and in the branches. The use of buttons as leaves creates a 3D effect on the quilts surface.

The negative quilt contrasts the very bright trees with the very dark brown of the forest at night. I quilted this with metallic thread to provide a bit of glitter in the forest. The contrasting stripes are cut from Burmese silk to lend additional sheen.

Using this tree template and the fusible web, you can go on to create your own version using four trees and show the four seasons. In choosing fabric, make sure you have good contrast between the trees and the background.

Skill Level: Intermediate, rotary cutting, basic sewing skills, fusible web applique

Finished Quilt Size: Quilt 1 – 35 inch square , Quilt 2 – 49 x 30 inches

Quilting Notes: Quilt 1 – I stitched around the trees using variegated thread. The spaces around the trees are filled with a free-form leaf pattern also using variegated thread. The border is stitched using a large spiral all the way around the outside of the quilt. Quilt 2 – I used a dark thread to stitch around each tree to secure it. I then used a metallic thread to sew free-form lines vertically down the quilt about 1 – 1 ½ inches apart.

Fabric requirements:

  • 1 yd. (1m) background fabric for Quilt 1
  • ½ yd. (50cm) total assorted fabrics for border and corner squares for Quilt 1
