Teaching at Quilt Encounter 2018

Quilt Encounter is the South Australia Quilters Guild’s annual retreat, offering workshops in a variety of techniques for Traditional Quilts through to Art Textiles, suitable for the beginner, intermediate and advanced quilter. Held at Immanuel College, Novar Gardens, SA, it is a live-in event and you are invited to attend for 2, 3 or all 6 days.

This year I have been invited to teach at this wonderful event. I’m excited to be teaching these classes.

Fish & Chips 2 Day Class

Size 41 inches x 57 inches, suitable for all skill levels

Use fusible web and improvisational piecing techniques to create this fun and easy fish themed quilt.

Fish are so much fun to use in pattern design because they lend themselves to an enormous range of fabric colours and textures.

You will have five fish blocks to work with – all of different sizes and shapes… and the tantalising randomness of the improvised chunky chip blocks may just liberate you from the tyranny of perfect right angle forever!

Enchanted Forest 2 Day Class

Two quilts from one class – Quilt 1, 49 inches x 30 inches/Quilt 2, 35 inches square, suitable for confident beginner to advanced.

You will be enchanted in this class as one (very careful and somewhat intricate) cut nets you two stunning blocks.  The class explores the virtues of positive and negative images in design.

Using fusible web, you will create two quilts out of one set of trees.  You will have the opportunity to play with colour and texture, then use buttons or random pieces of fusible fabric to add leaves and fruit to your fairy tale trees.

Angle Tote bag 1 Day Class

Bag size 18 inches wide x 20 inches long x 4 inches deep, class suitable for all skill levels.

I originally designed this pattern using fat quarters of African fabric paired with a black on black base fabric. Since then, I have made it using Kaffe Fasset fabric. It also works well in Aboriginal print fabric or bright, fun modern prints. The tote bag has 2 large pockets inside to place all those essentials, plus a large central space where you can stash quilt projects, knitting, library books, whatever you need to carry.

The bag uses seven fat quarters, so allows for a good variety of colours and patterns. Don’t be afraid to pick large bold patterns – strong contrast increases the impact of the finished piece.
