I started off with a couple of Japanese fabrics I had picked up at the local quilt store and built a quilt design around them — hence the name “Building Blocks”.

This pattern presents a challenge for the quilter as every block is a different shape and size…

Description

The overall design is unified by colour and the circular shapes in both the quilting and the border appliqué juxtapose the rectangles and squares of the main design.

You will need to keep close track of the pieces as you cut. I would suggest keeping a plastic sheet protector or baggie for each block. As you cut, put the appropriate piece in the bag. I have included the block number in the cutting instructions so you can keep the pieces together as you cut.

Skill Level: Intermediate (accuracy is the key), rotary cutting, basic sewing, fusible web appliqué

  • ¼ yd (25cm) light gray
  • ⅓ yd (35cm) mustard
  • ¼ yd (25cm) medium brown
  • ⅓ yd (35cm) Japanese print
  • ⅓ yd (35cm) dark brown
  • ⅓ yd (35cm) dark print
  • ¼ yd (25cm) green
  • ½ yd (50cm) red sashing
  • 1 yd (1m) border
  • ½ yd (50cm) binding
  • ½ yd (50cm) fusible web for circles (optional)
  • 3 yds (3m) backing fabric
  • 52 inch square of batting

All patterns have been test quilted to ensure accuracy.
