Seminole Revisited Quilt Pattern

$AUD 11.99

Traditional Seminole patchwork is a strip piecing technique devised by the Seminole Indians of Southern Florida. By sewing strips of fabric together, cutting and setting on an angle, they created many beautiful and seemingly complex designs. It is a technique that has always fascinated me.

In my version, which I have titled “Seminole Revisited”, I have deviated from the traditional method of using solid fabric by using modern print fabric.

This pattern is extremely flexible. You can make it for a queen size bed, single bed or create just one block as a table topper.

Description

You can really clear out your stash with this one. Each square requires one half yard of the focus fabric and you can mix and match. Unify the quilt by using the same colour as the centre strip of each Seminole block and the centre of each block.

Skill Level: intermediate, rotary cutting and basic sewing skills

Finished Size:

  • Table Topper – 29 inch sq,
  • Single Bed – 66 x 84 inches,
  • Queen Bed – 95 inch sq

Materials (provided by you):

Requirements shown are for a single block of 25 inches. Decide how many blocks you would like to make and multiply fabric amounts. Eg. 1 block for table topper, 4 blocks for lap quilt, 6 blocks for single bed, 9 blocks for queen bed

A) ½ yd. (50cm) Focus fabric for each block

B) ⅓ yd. (30cm) center Seminole strip and center block fabric

C) ⅓ yd. (30cm) strips bordering Seminole units

D) ¼ yd. (25cm) for strips surrounding the center

E) Border fabric varies depending on how wide you would like your borders.

  • For a table topper , put a minimum border size of 2½ inches around so ½ yard is sufficient.
  • For the queen bed size, I added 2 borders. The first is 2½ inches (requiring 24 inches of fabric) and the second is 8 ½ inches (requiring 2 yards of fabric)

F) ¼ yd. (25cm) binding

G) Backing

  • 1 yd. (1m) backing for table topper,
  • 5 yds. (5m) backing for single bed (6 blocks)
  • 7 yds. (7m) backing for queen bed (9 blocks)

H) Batting to suit—allow 2-3 inches beyond the size of your finished quilt top

All quilt patterns have been test quilted to ensure accuracy.
