Random Heart Quilt Pattern

$11.99

Random Heart is a quilt that explores many different quilting techniques.

I was asked to teach a class that allowed participants to learn several different quilting techniques. As a result, making this sampler quilt offers you experience in these quilting techniques: flying geese, paper piecing, Seminole patchwork, half-square triangles, log cabin, improvisational stars, and fusible web appliqué.

Of course, I wanted mine to be different and give the quilter a chance to express themselves.

Description

I was asked to teach a class that allowed participants to learn a number of different quilting techniques. Usually this is done as a sampler set out with 9 or 12 blocks, each using a different piecing method.

I, of course, wanted mine to be different instead of setting it out as a traditional sampler of blocks. This design uses a free-form construction technique that ensures every quilt will end up personalised. This is a favorite method of mine, you put your quilt together by adding random fabric pieces as the spirit and design moves you. This hones your ability to visualise and design your quilts.

I have made two versions of this quilt and have put it together differently each time. When making this quilt, I urge you to explore possibilities and make it your own.

Random Heart is also a quilt which is very scrap friendly. My first quilt was made from my scrap basket. The second quilt was made using scraps of Turtle Hand batiks. The largest piece you will need is one 12½ inch square. Have fun selecting your fabric choices!

Finished quilt size:

  • 42 x 51 inches (orange quilt)
  • 40 inch square (grey quilt)
